IVF is the abbreviation for In Vitro Fertilisation and the process is simply the uniting of the egg and sperm in a laboratory. When there are fertility problems with either the male or the female or both then IVF may be suggested as a course of treatment if you want to conceive a baby. However, there are a few criteria that would make you a viable candidate. So who is suitable for IVF treatment?

If a woman has problems with her fallopian tubes, for example, there may be a blockage or the fallopian tube is damaged then this may make such a woman suitable for IVF. If the fallopian tubes are blocked then it would make it very difficult for conception to occur because the sperm would be unable to travel through the fallopian tubes to fertilise the egg. IVF would bypass this process.

If a woman has severe endometriosis it can affect the fertilisation of the egg and also the implantation of the embryo in the uterus. Such a case would require intervention to assist conception to occur so IVF could be the solution.

There are also cases where some women find that their body doesn’t release or produce eggs due to certain ovarian issues. If an egg is not produced or released during the reproductive cycle then it makes it very difficult to fall pregnant. A fertility specialist would have to assist in such a case.

An abnormal uterus shape or fibroid tumours would also make conception very difficult so IVF may be a possible solution for couples who so desperately want to have a baby.

Male candidates that could be suitable to IVF treatment would be those who display a low sperm count or motility issues which would make conception almost impossible. Another factor could also be where a man has problems with sperm function which could inhibit the fertilisation process from taking place. If sperm function is unpredictable then other conception alternatives would need to be considered.

In unique cases where infertility is unexplained or the cause cannot be determined on either the male or female side, the fertility specialist may recommend an IVF treatment for the couple. Infertility is more common than most people tend to believe and it affects many people. It is nothing to be ashamed of and it is good to know that there are solutions in terms of fertility treatment.

The first thing to do is to go for a check up with a fertility specialist to find out if you are a suitable candidate for IVF. They will check what the cause of infertility may be and will then make a recommendation depending on your circumstances. Then make sure that you follow all the steps as the fertility specialist guides you. It may seem like a difficult path to follow so ask the doctor all your questions so that you know what you’re getting yourself into. Remember that the end result is a bundle of joy so everything you’re going through will be worth it and also forgotten.
