Male infertility is usually not discussed amongst peers, but there is nothing to be ashamed of. Once you’ve been able to talk about your symptoms and your condition, you can determine what solutions are available to you. Before you can consider a treatment you need to be aware what could lead to infertility in men.

The causes of male infertility can be grouped into two categories, namely physical abnormalities of the male reproductive tract, and abnormalities of the sperm. Physical abnormalities would include the obstruction of the sperm or impaired sperm production. To determine fertility in men, a fertility specialist will conduct a semen analysis to test the number of active sperm as well as the shape and activity of the sperm. The sperm may not be moving fast enough or in the right direction, or their numbers may be too low. Blockages or obstructions of the sperm may occur in the tubes leading away from the testes. Other blockages may be caused by an infection, prostate problems, absence of vas deferens or a vasectomy. Any type of blockage will stop the sperm from reaching their destination, so it must be dealt with to give the sperm a chance. Sperm production problems have been related to genetic causes, infections, certain medications or chemicals, radiation, or varicose veins of the testes.

Other causes of male infertility could be hormonal imbalances, such as low levels of hormones that are produced in the pituitary gland. This may be due to pituitary issues that a man may have had since birth. Steroid abuse is also a cause of hormonal imbalances and should be mentioned during fertility assessments. Low levels of sperm antibodies also play a role in fertility. This could be caused by a vasectomy, an injury or infection in the epididymis, or by an unknown cause. These symptoms occur in a small percentage of men, but it shouldn’t be ruled out altogether. When you are trying to find out the cause of infertility, all routes must be considered.

It is deliberated that in about half of the cases, male infertility has been the cause of non-conception. That is why it is important that both the male and female be tested. In certain cases the cause of male infertility may be unknown, but in most cases a cause can be established by the fertility doctor. If you find that there are any abnormalities with your body or reproductive system, be sure to check it with a medical professional.
