For many people the consumption of alcohol is a normal social activity that they deem as fun. It’s a way for some people to loosen up and have fun, but that’s only because the intake of alcohol lowers your inhibitions and affects your senses. In certain cases, this is not such a good thing. However, this is not the only affect that alcohol has on the human body. If you are trying to conceive a baby then you may need to avoid alcohol or lower it considerably.

For some couples conception is not as easy as it seems, it can be challenging. Sometimes alcohol, especially binge drinking or the abuse thereof, plays a role in infertility in either or both the male and female. It can affect the conception process whether you are trying to conceive naturally or via infertility treatments.

In men alcohol is toxic to sperm. It’s that simple. It can interfere with sexual performance while reducing the sperm count. The fewer sperm available, the smaller the chance of conception can occur. Alcohol also disrupts hormone balances which are necessary during the reproductive process. Although it is recommended that you avoid alcohol altogether, for men three to four standard drinks a day is the maximum.

In women alcohol also disrupts hormone balances and interferes with sexual performance which decreases the possibility of conception. If you have managed to conceive then alcohol can increase the risk of miscarriage. Or much worse, a high alcohol intake can cause foetal abnormality. Women need to limit their alcohol intake to one to two standard drinks a day. Avoiding it completely can have a positive effect on fertility.

Keep in mind that your body is a natural entity and requires natural foods as fuel for it to function efficiently. This applies to the reproductive system also. If you are trying to conceive and it takes longer than expected, don’t be tempted to turn to alcohol. Rather release the stress via natural means such as light exercise, meditation, relaxation or yoga.

A fertility doctor will be the best person to consult in case you have doubts about your fertility status. You and your partner will undergo a few tests to check your fertility and will be able to advise you as to what to do in your particular situation. Keep in mind that the fertility doctor will be completely honest with you so be prepared for every piece of advice that they give you.
